My New Favorite Toy – Dropcam

I’m a big fan for students using real-time data and authentic experiences as part of their learning.  I recently discovered Dropcam, ” a cloud-based Wi-Fi video monitoring service with free live streaming, two-way talk and remote viewing that makes it easy to stay connected with places, people and pets, no matter where you are.”  Its designed for homeowners, for security purposes.

I installed a Dropcam Pro in one of our classrooms overlooking Central Park.  The set up took about three minutes – out of the box, download the App, connect your Dropcam.  Dropcam also allows you to save up to seven days worth of video to the cloud to access and timeline later.  The cloud storage isn’t cheap but seems well worth it.

Video can be accessed through a browser or through an App.  Even better, the video can be embedded anywhere you want it to be embedded.

The image quality is impressive – considering the camera shoots through a window.  The quality at night is impressive as well, even though you do get some reflection from the window.  It would be great if Dropcam developed a waterproof or outdoor version.  Here are some screen caps from day and night.
